This is a new edition of the forty Old English homilies which make up the first of the two series of Catholic Homilies written by Aelfric of Eynsham c. 990. It is a major work of Anglo-Saxon prose, written by one of the foremost scholars of his time. A subsequent volume, in preparation, will provide commentary and glossary for this text as well as for the Second Series, published in 1979.
