Jesse Warfield and James Wyndham are the unlikeliest romantic duo among their native Baltimore riding set. When James is thought to have ruined Jessie's reputation in a misapprehended comedy of errors, the pressure is on him to make an honest woman out of her. At the same time, pressure is put on Jessie to leave town, and she flees to an unlikely haven: the estate of James's British cousins, the Earl and "Duchess" of Chase. By the time James catches up with her, Jessie is hardly recognizable as the ragamuffin he once rode against. Under the Duchess's tutelage, Jessie has undergone a transformation worthy of Pygmalion. A bit smitten and feeling a bit guilty, James proposes; Jessie, who has long harbored a crush on her handsome neighbor, accepts. The two wed, but their passion uncovers a darker side of Jessie: each time she and James make love, she is troubled by hideous nightmares--nightmares that soon reveal themselves to be recovered memories of a long-ago attempted rape and murder.
