Description

The Chinese Lantern is a play written by Laurence Housman that tells the story of a young Englishman named Harry who travels to China to learn about the culture and customs of the country. While there, he falls in love with a Chinese woman named Lotus Blossom and they begin a relationship despite the disapproval of both their families and societies. The play explores themes of cultural differences, prejudice, and the power of love to overcome obstacles. Laurence Housman was a British playwright and author who was known for his works that tackled social and political issues of his time. The Chinese Lantern was first published in 1911 and is considered one of his most notable works.1908. Housman studied art at the Lambeth School of Art and the Royal College of Art. He had great success as an illustrator, but when his eyesight began to fail, he turned to writing books and plays. He wrote 80 books during his lifetime. He often seemed to fall afoul of the censors, though, for religious and political reasons. A committed socialist and pacifist, in 1907, he helped found the Men's League for Women's Suffrage. He was also an honorary associate of the Women Writers' Suffrage League. The cast of The Chinese Lantern features a Master of Arts and his family, students, apprentices and craftsmen; and assorted others.
