One of 101 titles in the St. Joseph Picture Book Series, this book by popular author Father Lovasik S.V.D., provides children with an explanation of the beautiful apparition of Mary to St. Bernadette.
The story of the apparition at Lourdes is a beautiful example of faith and courage. It began in 1858 in a small town in France called Lourdes, where a 14-year-old girl named Bernadette Soubirous saw a vision. One day, while collecting firewood near a cave, she saw a beautiful lady dressed in white with a blue sash and a veil. The lady was standing in a niche in the rock and was surrounded by light. Bernadette was frightened at first but returned to see the lady many times. The lady asked Bernadette to pray, do penance, and even dig in the dirt, where a spring of water began to flow.
This lady was Mary, the mother of Jesus, and she appeared to Bernadette 18 times in total. During these visits, Mary asked for a chapel to be built on the site and encouraged people to pray and seek healing. The spring that appeared has been known for its healing powers, and thousands of people come each year to Lourdes to bathe in or drink the water.

Today, Lourdes is a major pilgrimage site, and many people who visit the spring report feeling spiritually renewed or physically healed. Bernadette's visions were investigated by the Church and declared authentic, which helped many people grow in their faith. This story reminds us of God's love and the power of prayer, showing that even ordinary people like Bernadette can do great things with faith.
