Written in 1645, The Painter of Dishonour is one of Calderon's greatest plays, in which Don Juan Roca, an ageing painter, is driven to undertake a double vengeance when his young bride's lover, previously believed drowned at sea, returns from the dead and abducts her. The Painter of Dishonour received its British premiere in this translation at the RSC's Other Place in July 1995.
