Excerpt:
Dreams are funny...
I neared the driver's side of my father's truck, like a police officer giving a ticket. His window was open. I leaned my head in close to his. His bitter breath stung my nostrils but I welcomed it. He was out of breath. It felt like I was catching him at time of death. My face was close to his, nearly cheek-to-cheek and eye-to-eye. What he said next, he said without moving his lips. He spoke in neither Romanian nor English. He spoke in the most altruistic spirit I've ever heard from him. I wish you and this young lady well, he said. I want you to be as happy together as you could possibly be.
And that's when I woke up crying and angry. Angry that he was never willing to be hopeful like that when he was alive. And crying just because love hurts sometimes.
