The letters are addressed to a variety of correspondents, including her lover, the philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau. The book also includes commentary on Lespinasse's life and character by her contemporaries, as well as an introduction by the 19th century literary critic Charles-Augustin Sainte-Beuve.
