Dr. James Langabeer is a Professor of Healthcare Management, Policy, and Biomedical Informatics at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. He has spent most of his career focused on improving quality and efficiency of healthcare, and has involved hospital executive leadership, information technology startups, management consulting, and healthcare research and teaching. Dr. Langabeer was the founding Chief Executive Officer of a regional health information exchange, where he led the organization from concept to one of the largest in the country. As Assistant Controller at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, he oversaw the supply chain, strategic projects, and financial management of one of the largest hospitals in the country. James also served as the Executive Vice President of a premier mid-sized technology and consulting firm based in Cambridge. He has lived and/or worked extensively in Boston, London, Paris, Rotterdam, Tel Aviv, and Houston. He has served on the faculty of the University of Texas System, Boston University, and Baylor College of Medicine. Dr. Langabeer has served as principal investigator on many national research projects. He has been funded by the American Heart Association, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, Health and Human Services, and many other agencies and foundations. He has nearly 100 publications in some of the highest rated management and clinical journals such as the Health Care Management Review, Pediatrics, and Health Care Management Science. Dr. Langabeer earned his PhD from the University of Lancaster in England in Management Science with an emphasis on decision-making, and an MBA from Baylor University. He is a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives (FACHE).
Jeff Helton is an Associate Professor of Health Care Management at Metropolitan State University of Denver and holds adjunct appointments at the University of Colorado at Denver School of Business, University of Texas School of Biomedical Informatics, George Washington University, and the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center. He is a former hospital and health system Chief Financial Officer with more than twenty five years of experience. Jeff holds a Master of Science in Hospital and Health Administration from the University of Alabama at Birmingham and a PhD in Health Care Management from the University of Texas School of Public Health and is a Fellow of the Health Care Financial Management Association. He is also a Certified Management Accountant, a Certified Fraud Examiner, a Certified Specialist in Business Intelligence, and a Certified Associate in Health Information Systems. Jeff serves the Health Administration education community as a member of the Board of Directors of the Association of University Programs in Health Administration. His ideas on the health care system can be found in a bi-monthly column on "Disruption and Innovation in Health Care" in Healthcare Financial Management.
