The story of a woman who is married to a man who she believes is a traveling merchant, but is, in reality, the brutal dictator of a foreign kingdom. As war grips her nation, she is forced to flee, with her two sons, to the nation she most fears, and is forced to confront the fact that she was married, in a Christian marriage, to a man that was already married. The brutal warmonger, Alois Schoenberg. In protecting her sons, she learns who she really is, who her husband really is, and why things often aren't as simple as they seen.
