John Peebles is retired and happy, content with his fireplace, his cat Polyandria, his niece Lucy, and his historical gun collection. Events shift after sharp-eyed dealer Nathan Hyde offers John a gold-mounted revolver with gold bullets, a Colt .45 once owned by gambler Alex Peterson. Peterson was rumored to have played a game of poker that 'cracked' the remote mining town of Torridity. That evening, John is summoned by phone to his close friend and neighbor, Andrew Ogden, but arrives to find a murder. Events quickly escalate, as Ogden's son, Jerry, (Lucy's fiancée) is accused of murder, and a hardened detective is set loose on his trail. John joins the investigation, discovering that what happens in the past never entirely disappears.
Gold Bullets was published in 1929.
