Maxwell Schaefer, a Jewish refugee from Austria-Hungary in the early 1900s, attempts to find acceptance in German society in the years before the First World War by joining the Imperial German Air Force. As conflict breaks out, he finds that fitting in with his fellow aviators may prove harder than it seems. He faces bigotry at every turn but finds solace in friendships and the knowledge that he is serving the nation that took him in.
Even as Maxwell conquers the air, the traumatizing emotions endemic to war dog him. Writing in his diary, he documents his battle experiences and wrestles with his faith. Over time, he confronts his deepest fears and desires, leading him to face his biggest challenge: where his ultimate loyalties lie.
