This is one of Goble's illustrations for the 1909 edition of Charles Kingsley's masterpiece The Water Babies, A Fairy Tale for a Land Baby. It shows the fairies fitting a new pair of wings to a young girl. Kingley's story demonstrates the way that children's literature altered fairy traditions. The orphan Tom can only find happiness once he has died and been transformed into a water baby - a reversal of older folk tales where fairies were feared for stealing children away from their families.
