Back on Horace's train, Patrick, Ben, and a small team of young Red Caps find one final glimmer of hope: a rumored cure on the coast of California, 2,000 miles away, with the clock ticking down to Ben Fogelvee's death.

Amid the chaos and destruction of the end of the world, there's only one route left to southern California - the Slaughterhouse Run, a long stretch of dangerous track ruled by warring factions of deranged killers, looking to derail and destroy any train crew crazy enough to take the route.
