An Invaluable Account.
Three lawmen were present on July 14, 1881, the night that the notorious outlaw William H. Bonney, alias Billy the Kid, was killed. Of those three, two left behind firsthand accounts of the events of that fateful evening.
Sheriff Pat Garrett, the man who fired the shot that killed the Kid, included his account in his book "The Authentic Life of Billy the Kid!'
Deputy John W. Poe's account was first presented in December of 1919, in "Wild World Magazine;' and, shortly after that, went on to be published in book form.
Annotated, arranged, expanded
