While Kat and the kitchen staff maintain the empty Mayfair house one October, while the family resides in the country, Lord Clifford, Lady Cynthia's confidence trickster father, arrives in London and asks Kat and Daniel for help in a tricky situation.

Kat Holloway's employer decides the family will spend Easter dinner at a friend's house in Portman Square, where Kat will substitute for that home's cook. Kat objects but has no choice but to obey.
