In Volume 1, Curt, "The Kid," dodged infantry duty by securing a spot with Armed Forces Radio only to be reassigned to Psychological Operations (PSYOPS) in Vietnam. Unable to speak Vietnamese, he was supposed to advise on propaganda announcements but was instead dragged into dangerous combat missions by his gung-ho commander, 2Lt. Wilson, who ignored their true mission. Desperate to escape, Curt fakes losing his glasses to get to Saigon, where he auditions for AFVN. They agree to transfer him if he extends his tour. As Volume 2 begins, he's still stuck in combat while the transfer crawls through red tape. Things worsen when Wilson volunteers them for an Armed Propaganda Team made up of ex-Viet Cong, tasked with hunting their former comrades. Curt refuses the assignment, sparking a dramatic showdown that alters both their paths. All the while, Curt navigates the madness of war in a haze of weed, locked in a surreal rivalry between stoners and alcoholics.
