This is a study of the work of the early Choctaw legislature. The Constitution of the Choctaws and the workings of the Legislature indicate two outstanding things which greatly influenced the national life of the Choctaws. First, they were surrounded by the United States. Because of this, there is no provision for maintaining an army and navy, save a state militia; or any provision for foreign relations with any nation but the United States. Second, it was a nation containing another nation-the Chickasaws. These are named in the Choctaw Constitution where their boundary limits are defined again. They also had direct influence on subsequent Choctaw legislation.
