Description

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2017 in the subject Art - Photography and Film, grade: -, language: English, abstract: Place is an intangible concept. It is often used within geographical terminology, but the very nature of place eludes easy definition or categorization. In this dissertation I will interrogate the notion of place, how place is differentiated from space and how a photograph represents place using examples from different genres of photography. I will take examples of landscape, urban, architectural and interiors to look in detail at the manner in which photography produces meaning and represents place. A particular aspect of the relationship of photographic representation to place is how photography, using only the singular sense of seeing, can transform a literal reality into a meaningful representation of the multi- sensory experience of actually being in a place. My own photographic practice is based around architectural space and place, so I will be looking in particular at the many factors that influence photographs of buildings and how they represent place.
