Description

The brick manufacturing sector in India is the second-largest producer globally, following China, with an estimated annual production of 140 billion bricks. However, this industry significantly impacts the environment, consuming approximately 24 million tons of coal and biomass, emitting an estimated 41.6 million tons of CO₂, and depleting around 350 million tons of fertile topsoil each year. Despite these environmental challenges, the brick industry remains a crucial component of the Indian economy and cannot be entirely phased out. Consequently, ongoing research focuses on developing sustainable alternatives to mitigate its adverse effects. This study explores the use of fly ash as a substitute for fertile soil in brick production. Various laboratory tests were conducted, and experimental bricks were manufactured and fired in a small-scale kiln installed in college campus. The performance of these fly ash-based bricks was compared with conventional bricks, demonstrating notable advantages. The findings indicate that this alternative material has the potential to significantly reduce the environmental impact of the brick industry while maintaining structural integrity and quality.
