He was misunderstood in various ways, especially by the religious leaders of the time. He pointed out their hypocrisy while they tried to earn the favor of God through legalism. Yet they had very little compassion for outcasts or others suffering. They were enraged when he healed on the Sabbath instead of rejoicing over the healing of someone born blind, crippled, demon-possessed, afflicted by leprosy, or other debilitating or terminal illnesses.
