Lottery Ticket and the Crown of Thorns: an apocalyptic sci-fi novel

Humanity's conventional and nuclear weapons are ineffective, and the aliens destroy much of our fossil fuel infrastructure. They materialize out of thin air and morph into human form, but assure us they are not conquerors. Our planet is teeming with life and must be preserved. There are many other planets similar to our own but distances between them are vast. They are here to help us correct the error of our ways.

Three days into this invasion, trucker Eugene Solomon stops for a young woman with a backpack trying to thumb down a ride. A day later, they are recruited into her deceased mother's political activist cell. So begins an effort to save humanity from its alleged path of self-destruction.
