Deceiver

Daniel and Ruth Baumer find their lives totally disrupted when Nightmares, a hit syndicated television show arrives in Challahooga to do an episode on the legend of Josiah Turnbull and the curse of the "River Tree." Daniel finds himself the unwilling center of their story and the recipient of unwanted attention.

"Miss McNair, I believe I need to warn you that you and your friends are dealing with things you have no business dealing with. You are over your head as it is and if you -" he now turned to Rod "- continue to 'push the envelope' trying to get better ratings terrible things are going to happen to those around you."

Daniel's warning goes unheeded. Brenda McNair, the host and star of the show, is trying to revive her career. Once an award-winning child actress, her career has barely survived her adulthood. Rod Givens, producer and director of the show, is about to see his dream of a hit show realized in the form of a deal to bring the show to a major network. Odetta Burke and William Howell, the show's resident psychic and parapsychologist fear being replaced by younger people. "Pushing the envelope" is exactly what they need to do to beat out the competition in supernatural "reality" shows.

They are about to learn a hard lesson in spiritual warfare; a lesson involving a young minister and his family that has impact beyond life and death and into eternity; a lesson that brings them face to face with a powerful evil as old as time.

She was standing at the top of the stairs - the woman in his dream; her gown flowing as if in a strong breeze she stared down at him with a gaze that was seductive, inviting, contemptuous, and malicious. Dan found himself both attracted and repulsed by her.
She smiled in what was supposed to be an alluring way, revealing yellowed, rotting teeth encased by her blood dripping red lips. Dan felt his stomach turn.
"What is it?" Ruth's voice startled him.
"Don't you see her?"
"Who?"
"Dear Lord, give my wife sight to see..."

In Deceiver, the story of Daniel (Danny) Baumer, that started with The Homestead, and continued through Unhallowed, finds Daniel and his wife, Ruth unwillingly involved in the world of "reality" television, where their major obstacle may not be just the enemy they face, but the very people they are trying to help.
