When two miners are found brutally torn apart near the remote town of Crescent Gulch, Colorado, in the summer of 1886, panic spreads fast. With the sheriff away and no answers in sight, the townsfolk turn to Cole "Grim" Grady-a battle-worn bounty hunter with a reputation for facing what others fear.

As Grady hunts the elusive predator in the forested ridges above town, he joins forces with Thomas "Whisper" Two-Moons, a Ute tracker who believes the creature is no mere animal, and Norah Doyle, a sharp-tongued journalist hiding behind the role of a schoolteacher. What begins as a manhunt becomes a battle between civilization and something older, primal, and intelligent-something that doesn't just kill, but remembers.
