Elesia K. Powell graduated from the University of Michigan-Flint with a Master's in Composition/Rhetoric. She is the winner of the prestigious Hopwood Award. The Hopwood Program administers the Avery and Julie Hopwood Awards in writing, awarding prizes each year for creative nonfiction, fiction, and poetry. She is also the winner of the Passion for Poetry prize. Elesia's Jamaican heritage and travels throughout the United States, Europe, and the Caribbean are reflected in her writings.
