Description

The Qur'an is the total number of revelations which were communicated to Prophet Muhammad, about 14 centuries ago [610-632 AD]. The scattered fragments were collected from scraps of parchment and leather, tablets of stone, ribs of palm branches, camels' shoulder blades and ribs, pieces of board, and the bosoms of people [the retentive memory of his followers].
The current definitive canon is in Arabic, the original language . It was authenticated during the reign of caliph Uthman [644-656 AD], who is one of the Prophet's companions, and directed by the Prophet's amanuensis, Zaid Ibn Thabit.
The beauty of Qur'an's language with its richly varied rhythms and variety of rhetoric and its syntax, makes it rank amongst the greatest literary masterpieces of all time. It is neither prose nor poetry, but a unique fusion of both, which makes it impossible to match on translating it to English and other languages . Not only that, but it descended on Prophet Muhammad in the ancient Arabic language of previous millennia, which is different in vocabulary and syntax from today's Arabic. This has compounded the task of its translation to other languages and makes it a challenge specially to non-Arab translators . It is impossible to use electronic translation as it can deform the meaning of the verses because it contains some outdated Arabic vocabulary and syntax, which electronic translation can transform into odd English or gives it different meaning.
There is a great range of Arabic tafsirs [exegeses] over the centuries, to interpret The Qur'an. I had to consult those Arabic tafsirs and Arabic and English lexicons, to interpret the verses properly .
Qur'an has been written as continuous phrase and its sentences are not end-dotted but there are symbols instead, to indicate the sequencing of sentences which cannot be replicated in other languages. It is notable that in Qur'an, a verse may be an incomplete sentence or may contain one or many sentences, which can be on different subjects, but within the general theme of the chapter [sura]. A verse may also contain part of a sentence from a verse which precedes or follows it, and one sentence or quotation might take many verses, so I used multiple dotting or comas between verses to indicate this.
