Functional (as in programming) engineers are often on the leading edge of software development, and the solutions they undertake have required large-scale innovations in the field of computer science generally. Urbit is currently engaged in such endeavors, such as the directed messaging project, a full-stack rewrite of Urbit's networking to enable 100-1,000× throughput and increased connection stability. This issue of USTJ showcases Urbit's public-key infrastructure namespace, aspects of Urbit's conceptions of files and HTTP messaging, and its solid-state reproducible build system.
