Kumaoni proverbs are the true gems of the Kumaoni language. They add vibrancy and depth to everyday conversations. While the language may currently be categorized as unsafe by UNESCO's Atlas of the World's Languages, I believe these proverbs are and will remain a constant in the lives of Kumaonis, seamlessly woven into their speech. Their playful wit, humor, and wisdom give them an undeniable charm, ensuring they remain relevant across generations. It's no surprise that these age-old expressions, born of rural wisdom, are now making their way into state government exams, standing as a testament to their enduring value.

In this collection, I have curated proverbs with their phonetic spellings, literal translations, meanings, and examples, in both Hindi and English. The aim is simple: to offer an enriching experience to readers of all backgrounds, allowing both Hindi and English speakers to immerse themselves in the timeless essence of these proverbs. By incorporating modern-day examples, I hope to make the wisdom embedded in these proverbs accessible and relatable to readers of all ages.

For me, these proverbs have always been more than just words. Growing up, they were like hidden treasures, passed down in family gatherings, evoking laughter, wisdom, and the occasional head-scratching puzzle. Now, I am honored to share this treasure trove with the world. I assure you, these proverbs are not just enjoyable, but they possess an addictive quality-you will find yourself searching for more! And rightly so, for the wealth of Kumaoni proverbs is vast and unending. Attempting to capture all of them in a single volume would be an injustice to their richness. Hence, this book offers a carefully selected collection of 200 proverbs, strung together like pearls, each one a reflection of the culture and spirit of Kumaon. But this is only the beginning-there will be more to come in this series. So stay tuned!

कुमाऊँनी कहावतें कुमाऊँनी भाषा का श्रृंगार है। मैं मानती हूँ कि भले ही आज कुमाऊँनी असुरक्षित भाषा की श्रेणी में आती है पर ये कहावतें आज भी लोक बोलचाल में प्रचलित है। इसका कारण इन कहावतों का शोख़-चुलबुलापन और हास्य रस से लबालब होना है। भाषाई सौंदर्य बढ़ाने के अलावा ये कहावतें आजकल उत्तराखण्ड लोक सेवा आयोग जैसी सरकारी परीक्षाओं में भी आने लगी है। आशा है कहावतों के इस संकलन से विद्यार्थियों को प्रतियोगी परीक्षाओं में विशेष मदद मिलेगी।
