Scholars generally agree that the Gospel of Mark was the first of the four Gospels to be written, probably between A.D. 55-65. The other Gospels quote all but thirty-one verses of Mark, and Mark records more miracles than any of the others.

Mark's Gospel is fast-paced, and one of his most characteristic words is "immediately!" The Gospel was written to the Christians in Rome, and may actually have been written in Rome.

The present work is not a commentary, and it is not an exposition of every verse in Mark, though it does move through Mark in an orderly sequence. These fifty-six sermons represent an extended effort to instruct and to encourage God's people as they explore the many topics addressed by The First Gospel.
