Irene and Walter Friedlieb were joyous newlyweds, but as Hitler rose to power in Germany their happiness slowly turned into fear. As time went on, Hitler grew more powerful and eventually invaded Austria. Irene knew they weren't safe as Jewish people in a Nazi-controlled land. In order to escape the terror they were living in, Irene and Walter had to pursue their hopes to escape to the United States and save their family. This wasn't an easy task and many barriers stood in the way. Each setback only empowered Irene, and she stood defiantly under the growing hate in her world.
