Lions, Dolphins, Tricksters, and Lazybones is a collection of stories for children from a dozen countries, ranging from Peru and Haiti to Zambia, Sri Lanka, and Pakistan. Funny, scary, uplifting, and exotic, they offer a "worldlier" alternative to Aesop and the Grimm Brothers. This is a wonderful way for kids to encounter other cultures. The stories were told to children, and sometimes by them, in storytelling sessions spearheaded by Childsplay International. You will see lots of children's illustrations of the stories, as well as onsite photos of the children and their teachers. Many of the children are vulnerable - they're displaced, in war zones, impoverished, on the street. But storytelling encourages them to imagine better lives. Caregivers should review the stories to determine which ones are appropriate for a particular child.
