In the mid-1800's a small six year old Ukrainian boy, my grandfather, was orphaned. In the early 1900's my British grandmother goes completely blind. In addition to the handicaps these recent immigrants to Canada could not foresee one of the most tumultuous periods in modern history soon to descend upon them. A thirty year period would engulf the world in a global war followed by the Spanish influenza, a market crash, the Great Depression, the Dust Bowl leading to another world war. How did they survive it or did they? During this time frame my Ukrainian grandparents found themselves embroiled in one of Canada's most notorious murders still revisited to this day. One of the families future hopes rested upon a second and third generation as they followed in the steps of their ancestors searching for a better future in another country undergoing cultural and racial upheavals, the Deep South of the United States.
