This story begins in 1940 with Sarah Collier as a little girl, who, along with her Stepmother and uncle, are caught in uncertainty and isolation following the mysterious death of her father after a macabre discovery of a native burial site on their prospecting claim in New Mexico. Just as Sarah and her stepmother believe they have begun to put their lives back together, they are faced with yet more tragedy at the hands of those who use cruelty in a misguided quest for vengeance. This woman and little girl are tested to the limits of human endurance, and Sarah develops a strangely mysterious alliance as her only hope to conquer tragedy and find peace within a harsh reality.
