Jack Travers a gambler from Fort Worth, Texas learns how to play poker from his buddies in cow town. As soon as he graduates from school, he decides to become a professional gambler and travel the country. He decides to head west and makes all the stops along the way. He finally ends up in Placerville, California, where the Eagle Mountain Saloon, hotel, and haunted mineshaft are well-known around the area. Jack ends up winning the mineshaft and eventually becomes the owner of the saloon and hotel he won in a poker game against Henry Black. Jack meets Chuck O'Bannon, the former partner of Henry and gets involved in the mining business, rebcuntatnly. Only Chuck wants to take it over completely, Jack decides to close the mineshaft due to unexplained and mysterious deaths among the mining crew. Chuck and Jack get in a fist fight over the subject of closing the mineshaft and Chuck ends up pushing Jack down the tunnel and everyone assumed he was dead. The mining crew end up taking matters into their own hands and hang Chuck for the murder of Jack, but later find out that Jack survived the fall and the rest is history...
