Corly had lived her entire life under the shadow of the Breathwynd Mountains like any other village girl. Spending her days honing her craft as an apprentice baker and pursuing her childhood friend Darien in the hopes he would notice her affections brought her satisfaction and joy. Every day was much like the last; until Darien's true nature asserted itself and her village was engulfed in the blood, fire and flame of the terrifying Ryudojin. Rescued by Lord Regam, head of the country's Bloodsetters, Corly learns Darien and his caretaker Oltan are much more dangerous than she could have ever imagined and that their existence poses a lethal threat to her homeland. Traveling with her saviors to the nation's capital through the mystical and mysterious Grove, Corly learns far more of the world and its dangers than she could have ever bargained for.
Under the strict tutelage of Lord Regam and his Bloodsetters, she learns the ways of etiquette, intrigue and violence with an intensity and ruthlessness that threatens to swallow her whole. Endowed with newfound strength and knowledge, Corly begins her quest to take revenge on the boy she had once loved and the creature she must kill. Not to mention having the unwanted attention of a monarch riddled with madness and the confusing visions plaguing her dreams, she must find a way to stop more desecration and madness from affecting her homeland even if it means getting blood on her own hands.
