Or at least, that's what Frankie Hart, Reaper-in-Training, is trying to convince herself. Tongue-tied and awkward, she's really just muddling through until retirement. When her high school bully, Beau, seeks her help to reunite with his recently departed girlfriend, Penelope, she agrees-for a hefty fee.

But as they say in Death, you make plans and the ghouls in Administration laugh. An expired passport puts Frankie and Beau on a path toward something more than friends, and while Beau wonders how long you have to wait after someone dies to break up with them, Penelope just wants to get back to her routine.

Stuck together on a luxury cruise ship sailing down the River Styx, this unlikely trio find themselves up against something bigger than their messy afterlives: murder.
