Inspired by the author's experience with autism and cognitive, physical, social, and emotional disabilities, When Spoons Are Low is a response to disability ableism, euphemisms, infantilization, and censorship while advocating for respect, inclusion, and a community of care.

It powerfully expresses the frustration of needing help while striving to be independent, the challenge of being gracious when underestimated, and the appreciation felt but not always aptly expressed.
