Roger Dawes and five of his friends travel from Minnesota to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania to participate in a reenactment of a part of the famous Civil War battle that took place there on July 1, 1863.
They haven't been reenactors for very long, but they've all come to love firing their reproduction Civil War era rifles, creating huge plumes of smoke, making ear-shatteringly loud booms, and producing the intoxicating smell of burnt gunpowder.
But everything changes when, on the morning of Monday, July 1, 2024, they walk through a mysterious cloud of dense white fog and emerge on the morning of Wednesday, July 1, 1863, in the heart of the real Battle of Gettysburg.
Is this a chance to right the wrongs of the past, or will they find themselves purely fighting to survive?
This is not only a tale of the terror and devastation wrought by war, but also of the camaraderie and thrill of combat, as the band of friends experience the exhilaration of living the history they thought they'd only read about in books.
